Apple breeds superior quality, crafstmanship, performance and some pretty cute commercials every once in a while. But Apple also fuels one hell of a rumor mill for product release dates.
Buzzdroid.com has decided to track the predictions of many of the MacLusters out there who have the balls enough to make and publish a prediction about the OS X Leopared release date. But first, the rules:
- The OS X Leopard release date prediction must be made on a website or blog.
- The post which makes the prediction date must have a verifiable published date. Thank you Google cache for agreeing to help us with this one.
- The prediction must be an actual date, not ‘Spring 2007′, ‘Sometime in the 4th quarter’ or any kind of BS pseudo release date. We want people out on a limb.
- The oldest published prediction date for the release date will be declared the winner in the event two entrants choose the same date for Leopard’s release.
Enter your predicted release date for OS X Leopard as a comment. Winner gets Apple geek fame.
There are two divisions, pro and amateur. The amateur division can publish predictions on this post as a comment. The pro division consists of any publication anywhere else.
The winner of the pro division gets nothing except fame and the satisfaction of knowing they came close to predicting the release date of OS X Leopard while all of their competing sites collapsed around them. The winner of the amateur division will probably get a Buzzdroid t-shirt or something goofy like that.
Why do this? Think “Houdini and the spritualists“.
So, without further ado, we give you the predictions:
| Site | Date | Published | JuJu |
If you see different prediction dates or earlier dates than the ones above, contact us so we can add the entrants to the pro division.
Amateurs, have at it.

I think the release date will be July 17th. This is because it is right after the WWDC07 where they will probably introduce Leopard along with the iPhone (since they are compatable), also July 17th is a Tuesday (historic apple release day), and the biggest hint is on the Apple.com Leopard Sneak Peek where the date on the iCal is July 17th. The only problem is that July 17th is in the summer and Jobs said Spring. I really hope it comes out earlier though (on MacBook Pro too so that I can get it preinstalled b/c I need a laptop)

I for one have been holding onto my iBook G4 that I bought just a few months before the intel macs came out. I didn’t want to buy the new hardware because if there were new hardware problems (and there were), they’d be harder/less convenient to fix than OS updates.
Once Apple announces that computers purchased at some date can get the Leopard release, then I’ll be ready to buy…not before then. Boy am I getting impatient, though.

How about the age old advice not to buy anything when a new model comes out, they usually end up making improvements to it because once the masses start using it they find all kinds of little “bugs” that need to be worked out. Ah yes I have given up hope I feel myself weakening, what if I break down and get a new Alien Ware computer instead? What makes me doubt Apple is that here we are September 8th already and not a peep from them. Throw us a bone people, do you not have some kind of an educated guess as to when it will be coming out? Is it even going to be in 07? Ok I am done with my novel and still sticking with my original guess, but moving on with my life and not waiting for a leopard anymore! That’s when I think Leopard will be released. I base that on how everything has gone. It takes 4 to 6 weeks for it to be in HEAVY beta testing before it reaches “gold status” at which point they will gear up to ship it. In August they released another version to the developers. The date was August 24th 2007 when that build was released. And it’s being called the final beta of Mac OS X Leopard… With that in mind I give my educated guess that October 26th, 2007 is the release date.

Most notably as one said on another site that “Apple tends to release products on the last or second to last Friday of the month” in October that would be October 19th or October 26th. However, they haven’t followed with the tradition of the count down timer so anything before October 19th is out. Furthermore many suspect the announcement at the Paris Expo.
So It will be announced this month at the Paris Expo. Count down timer will be put up on September 26th. Mac OS X Leopard will be released to the public on October 26th. All the pieces fit. My post on here before was more of a feeling. Now it’s a very strong feeling and a highly educated guess.

During the last Apple event in which the iPod Touch was revealed, Steve Jobs made a casual and sheepish reference… about Mac OS X Leopard and he said… “when it is released later this year.”
Didn’t anyone else pick up on this? He said it in a kind of defeated tone. I think everyone got caught up in the excitement of the price drop of the iPhone, but for me, this was the big subtle news of the day.
If this isn’t the case, why don’t we hear of the release of the gold disc to manufacturing? That needs to happen at least 1 month before I think.

Very interesting point Terrance. Yes he did do that. But October is later this year. However, I can’t help but to think of Steve Jobs’ personality, and his abilities as a public speaker. He manages to get everyone hanging on his every word. However, this is a critical point in time for the entire computer industry. Apple is not going to make a mistake in launching Leopard. If they delay it again, which I highly doubt will happen, It will be for good reason. One has to remember that Leopard is to put more of a technological gap between Mac and Windows.
And after finding out Leopards “road map” I have to say that it’s getting released in October… as there hasn’t been any recent seeds to developers… and its been about two months now… which means its in the final phases of beta testing.
Take that back… recent seed as of the 21st of September.

Terrance wrote,
Yes, October is later this year. But he didn’t say a confident or definitive “Next Month.” which is what people would normally say if they are speaking about October, while in September.
It’s already late. I heard Steve in previous talks say “End of 2006″, or “The same day Windows Vista ships!”
Vista was delayed to Spring 2007. And it is bizarre that everyone was expecting ‘Secret Features’ to be revealed in the Developer Convention and nothing new was revealed. He talked about the top 10 features, maybe he didn’t mention ‘Desktop Stacks’ in the previous year.
If anything, Sun’s announcement a week or two before that their next generation file system ZFS was going to be in Leopard kind of made sense. That was a juicy tidbit to hold back on. My guess is that the developers said that they can’t put everything in and guarantee stability at the same time… and they had to scale back on what they were striving for and focus on what they believed they could deliver.
From what I hear there isn’t much to jump for joy about Vista. So Apple better do the right thing and delay if they need to by another month to improve stability.
Recent seed was 21 Sep? That’s way too close to October. Maybe they’ll make it… but the timeline is extremely tight.
Quote | Link | September 24th, 2007 at 9:30 pm
The Laughing Man wrote,
The road map is clear… Leopard seeds will increase exponentially followed by 3 to 4 weeks of heavy beta testing… August 24th… new developer release… September 20th new developer release… September 21st yet another new developer release… It’s not entirely out of the question for Leopard to ship as soon as October 26th… That would allow for more testing. I’m guessing, and this is highly speculative, that there is a reason they are holding so much about Leopard back. Like Apple has done in various ways in the past… it’s possible there is a huge gun within Leopard that needs refining plus the transparency on the menu bar was adjusted.. that indicates that graphics wise Leopard is done. Stability… haven’t heard much about that. From what I’ve gathered it’s currently very stable. Few hardware/software related issues though. If I’m guessing correctly all of this boils down to one fact. Apple is moving in for the kill, so to speak. Microsoft is floating a body of water… bleeding from their mistakes back in the 90’s… which lead to the blunder that is Vista… and their failing profits… they actually adjusted their assets to make it look like Vista sold really good when it was released.
Apple isn’t in a rut anymore… they can take Microsoft on now. Leopard… Leopard is the future of Apple’s flag ship… one mistake and it will turn into a Titanic. Steve may sound doubtful but I don’t believe it’s due to another delay. October is a good month… tis the end of the year… October November December… end of the year… another thing… if Apple delays it again… it will probably hurt them financially.
One last note… for all we know… the September 21st developers release… was the final beta version… also bear this in mind… once they release the 10.4.11 update… Leopard is rattling its cage… confirmation is that 10.4.11 is the final update to Tiger… soon after that Leopard comes out. Don’t know if Jeff Uberstine has heard the same news… but thats what I’ve heard from many places. reliable places.

“PLEASE NOTE: This product is expected to ship sometime in October. We will update the site with more specific information as soon as it is available, including system requirement details.”
Furthermore, I think that Apple will release Leopard on October 21st. Has anyone claimed that date yet?

acebanana I did something like that before I even posted what I did. I checked around at various places. Checking for specific things. Its about knowing what to go by and what not to. The “for Dummies” series of products is one to go by. They will release their product as close to the release of the product their book is for as possible. Plus Wal-Mart has messed up many times. I got them in trouble with Nintendo around April of this year.
I believe someone slipped up along the lines. I’ve thought about it more and still keep coming to the same conclusion. Leopard is rattling its cage… and the warden is cautiously approaching the cage with the key to let Leopard loose.

Apple software comes with a ’software coupon’ that can be used against an upgrade coming soon after purchase. I remember doing this with Tiger and a new Powerbook. The point release was a month or so after my purchase, but with the coupon I was able to receive a copy of the new OS for $4 plus shipping.
If you buy a new mac now and Leopard is released in six weeks, I’m confident you’ll be able to get the update for next to nothing. It’s the hardware sale that matters to Apple, remember. Call up the Apple store and ask about the above policy. If they don’t confirm that you can get a software upgrade within two months of a new mac purchase, I’ll switch to Windows.

Their support site will probably change too… there’s a beta-version up already for viewing on the AppleCare Service Support site (only accessible to Apple Technicians).
I know this because the Mac OS X recertification exams are changing as of 15th October.
They did the same thing after the PPC/Intel transition.
Make sure to get down to your local Apple Store to pick up a copy on the 15th.

The others seem too early given no slips/hints yet of release imminence even though they include a Tuesday and a Thursday (2 and 4), days of the week favored by many prognosticators citing Apple release history (to which knowledge I claim no privelege). And I hope not to see any further slippage as then one is in November (maybe Leopard would be reversioned to 11.ought then and released on Guy Fawkes Day…).

October 9th, or 16th - the first 3 weeks of October - ruling out Oct. 2nd as being too early for October. October 22nd is a better bet, because I don’t think Apple would wait til the last Tuesday of October (29th) to release Leopard just so it’s “released in the nick of time.”
Of course, the announcement could be made on those dates (9th or 16th) and, like the iPhone, be released for sale later. I hope Apple would do a pre-order on those dates.
If Leopard isn’t for sale the day of its announcement, then it would be later. Say it’s announced on the 9th, it would be in stores and shipping on the 19th.
Just my thought.

So If I look at the calendar, we can rule out the 2nd (today) also, the latest leopard developer update was sent out only a few days ago, so we have to factor in that more than likely they have not reach full “gold master” status.
Also, we need to add days for the (gold master) to be produced into copies or even announce that the gold master is complete (apple has been big on the “shock and awe” technique so thats a hard ball to call) give that process at least a week. In total, I think thats about two weeks thrown in the toilet. If you shake and blend well, you will get…TUESDAY THE 30TH. TA-DAA!!!!.

Either way you look at it you gotta go through all the install steps you did when you bought your computer.
That’s not to say I wouldn’t do some swearing if I had just bought the computer and then the next day the new OS is out. I’m not sure about everyone else. But even in that event I would fork over 129 bucks for Leopard. Though I do hope they offer a free upgrade.

This also works with the “Leopard for dummies” release date of the 28th, as shown here. 4. Its a Wednesday - which is one of Apple’s release days. 5. Is it possible that today, October 7th, is the date we finally get our answer? It is currently 3:45 A.M. CDT, and the Apple homepage has been blank since at least 1:00 A.M. (the earliest I checked). Either today could be the date of the announcement and beginning of the countdown clock, or perhaps today is the date of the actual release. Most likely, it could be the announcement that the code has officially gone Gold, thus giving us the countdown we are waiting for.

Yeah, as much as I would love to think you were right Edward, I think it’ll be later October (>25th sometime). I can’t stand the wait any longer as I need to buy an imac for university (eBayed my mini about 3 months ago so am left ‘macless’) and the thought of having to shell out an extra ~£70 just cause I bought it a week or two early would be incredibly annoying. Hopefully there will be a window where there will be the option of upgrade at reduced cost but I’m a little skeptical. Anyway, I don’t think I can wait any longer so I’m putting my order in tomorrow; fingers crossed Jobs announces it today or tomorrow but, again, unlikely I think…

Only because DJ Mag is announcing it’s Top 100 on the 24th, why not announce it for all those Famous Mac Fan DJ’s. And it’s on a Wednesday, but then again, so is the 31st…… an extra week for Apple to prepare.
In the end, the real question is…….. Does anyone really know the release date, or at least then announcement date, from any of their sources!?!? Just to give us a bit of a countdown.

I reckon its gonna be Wednesday October 31 for a number of reasons:
1) That way stick to traditional release days of a wednesday (i think someone said it was earlier in this discussion).
2) Gives maximum amount of time for release preparation whilst still being in october as promised
3) On apple education stores if you order a new iMac BEFORE October 30 then you get a new iPod nano or equivalent rebate. By releasing leopard on the 31st when there will be a surge in iMac purchases Apple wont have to also give away a load of nanos for free (hence improving profit)
4)offering free nanos with iMac purchases (to people in education at least) up until the october 30 is a significant attraction to many to buy a mac and in doing so it limits the drop off in october sales of mac computers caused by people waiting for the anticipated arrival of Leopard.
just my reasoning behind why i think october 31 as leopard release date.
(I hope i’m wrong tho cos im desperate to get a new iMac! lol.)

I predict that Steve Jobs will make the announcement for Leopard and other new upgrades on Oct. 23rd or Oct. 24th for a number of reasons. First, it’s the last full week in October. Second, my gut tells me it will be late in the month. Third, announcing on the 23rd or 24th will give Apple enough time to release the product and have it pre-installed in all Apple store computers by week’s end. Fourth, releasing before the last full week of October seems a bit too optimistic and wishful to me, although THE SOONER THE BETTER, cause I definitely can’t wait.

Fifth, announcing on Oct. 31st wouldn’t make sense because they usually announce the product just before it’s released. Apple’s website and Steve Jobs told us Leopard will be out by October. Therefore for Leopard to be released by the 31st they will have to have Leopard pre-installed in the computers at least by that evening. Then, they will also need to plan the release arrangements for Leopard since there will most likely be a crowd of people waiting outside the apple stores to buy the new OS. To make it all worse, if you announce on the 31st how much time will that leave Apple customers to start camping outside the store to be first to get the new product. Leopard is too big and important for them not to have a big release ceremony like they did for the iPhone. Therefore, if the announce it on the 31st they will have to release it in November, making Jobs a lair (which is complete blasphemy to even think that).

I remember when Jobs announced the release of the iPhone he said they didn’t have resources and man power to release a completed version of both the iPhone and Leopard on time. They had to choose one or the other and they chose the iPhone as the higher priority. If I remember correct, they also released the final developer release of Leopard for final testing. You don’t do that till you have all the features working, have tested it countless times, have sent numerous releases to developers already, tested and debugged some more, and are inches away from a final seamless release. Most importantly, the Apple site still says, Leopard arrives in October, so they must be on track. I hold on to my Oct. 23rd – 24th prediction.

Next thing of business is Leopard is supposed to have features in it that were not even announced and the testing of these secret feature were tested in house at apples facility to ensure secrecy.
Last thing I heard about the Macbook Pro, and this is a rumor not confirmed but told by someone who works for apple is the HD screens will become standard on all models.. Also i have information not confimed but very accurate most of the time that says MBP will start including intel core 2 quad…Blu Ray drives may be introduced as an option or standard on Highest End Model…
I have heard alot of people thinking that the Macbooks will be redesigned to the brushed metal design.. I do not believe this is true due to apple only redesigns computers every 3-5 years for major cosmetic changes.. Look how long the imac and the ibooks lasted.
I did hear of a possible product line cut to the mac minis.. This i can not tell for sure but i have been hearing about them being cut from the line due to low sales…
If Leopard is pushed back it will be completely unexpected and a major let down… I do not believe hollios info is true due to it has gone gold master… meaning as we speak they are making the disks for it. gold master defined as Final Code…

The only credibile and legitimate source for Apple news is Apple itself. Apple is very good at keeping secrets and staying tight lipped. All thats out there are rumors, guesses, estimations, and previous behavior patterns exhibited by Apple. One rumor can’t be trusted. However if there is a consistant flow of information all saying the same thing then the chances of it being accurate are very high. The rumors I’ve been hearing all point to hardware upgrades for the Mac mini and Macbook in the future. Will it coincide with the release of leopard? I dont know.
However I do know that the Mac pro, iMac, and MBP all got memory upgrades in the past year one at a time. I also know that with the next generation of OS’ by Microsoft and by Apple, there will be a shift of 1gb standard memory 2gb max memory to a 2gb standard memory 4gb max memory. If you add all that up along with Apple’s release history its a pretty safe guess that macbook upgrades are next in line. When will it be? IDK. But it doesn’t hurt to wish for it to be together with Leopard.
Other hardware updates like Blu-ray, HD screens, design changes, and mac nano are highly possible but they more likely to be off in the future.

I’ll give everyone on here this. Through all the digging I’ve done I’ve come to a couple of conclusions.
The MacBook Pro is going to have a quad core CPU in it, a high rez screen, and LED backlighting. Perhaps a cosmetic change is coming probably not in this year or next year though. The MacBook is due for a cosmetic change though. Apple is taking a more environmentally friendly stance. So I would imagine they are going to have colored aluminum cases at some point in time. When is anyones guess. Also bear in mind that Apple is highly unlikely to put any HD-DVD drives in any of their computers. This is because back in 2005, I could be wrong on the year, Apple joined the BDA (Blu-Ray Disc Association). Also from what I’ve spotted it does seem the Mac Mini may be ousted. In favor of a slimmer replacement. Plus the addition of another laptop, possibly a tablet. That would be something like a MacBook Mini or MacTablet… you can have fun with the naming of it. Like I said though thats all from what I’ve dug up.

Not for at least a year… I have a first gen macbook and its only barly two years old.. mabey in a year or so they will revise them

What i said is that the only legit source for Apple release dates, for new hardware and software upgrades, is Apple themselves since they do a good job of keeping things secret. If you happen to find an Apple leak then great, share the info with the Apple faithful.

Killerspud, there have been problems with the current iMac. Don’t let that affect your purches though. I placed an order for an iMac, so to speak, knowing full well that there may be possible problems with the graphics card. That’s caused by the firmware/driver however you want to put it. Last I heard Apple is working their tails of trying to get it fixed. I don’t know if thats the only problem. I don’t really care because from what I’ve seen of their track record, it’ll get fixed sooner or later. From what I know, and I could be off a bit on many areas here as I haven’t checked on it recently, it’s only affecting the computer during times when the graphics card is being used heavily. When this problem occurs a simple reboot will get the system back to normal but will/may-not fix the problem.
Go to the Apple support site and go to the discussion boards for more information. That would be one of the best places to go. Due to what I’ve read on here and thanks in part to the very generous Jeff Uberstein I’m holding off on purchasing a MacBook Pro for awhile. Partly because of a hardware upgrade and partly because Apple has to clear out the stock of computers that have Tiger preinstalled.

I am waiting to get a macBook Pro and I want leopard, is there any reasons to actually wait for the release of leopard? I want to get the macBook Pro this weekend because I have been waiting for so long and i am bursting at the seems. Supposedly the stores won’t have leopard preinstalled in computers for at least another month anyway… so if I buy my computer now and then buy leopard a week later for $10 isn’t that the exact same thing as waiting a week and getting the MBP along with the leopard installation dvd, except for the fact that I had to pay $10? Even if I wait for a week I still have to install leopard myself.
The only reasons I would hold off buying my MBP is for either leopard to be preinstalled on it by Oct. 26, or if any of you think that a substantial hardware update to the macBook Pro is within the December range. I really hope there won’t be an upgrade cause even if there is I don’t think I’ll be able to wait for that long.
are there any draw backs to installing leopard myself instead of just waiting a month for it to come preinstalled? or is it the exact same thing?
I know that I have a lot of question but this is a really big decision for me, thanks so much for any responses!

Ryan, I’m getting an MBP myself. I’ve been waiting a long time to jump ship. I’m currently a Windows user. Thanks to, and I’ve said this soo many times before, Jeff I’ll probably wait until a little just to see how the upgrades go. It’s at the end of the current models life cycle and with the chance of having a possible option for a next gen disk drive (ie Blu-ray) and a CPU bump, which I’ve heard rumors of a quad core MBP, I’m going to probably wait to get my MBP. That’s just the way I’m gonna go.
Ultimately the choice is yours and yours alone. And from what I’ve read installing Leopard on a Tiger machine will “just work” I don’t see how anything could go wrong if you know what you’re doing. Just pop it in install and go. It should keep all your apps and all your files. Just a simple OS change. If it was Windows I would say buy now because of possible program and OS conflicts, but Apple is not Microsoft. One of my friends has a Mac and he jumped from I do believe Panther to Tiger but it could have been Jaguar. Anyway he told me that he didn’t have any problems what so ever.

Ryan, Like Tommy said it will be within the year. Apple tends to update their computers every 6 months. If you want to wait then wait. If you’re in college and sorta need a new computer buy now. It’ll probably be December, or January before the MacBook Pro update comes along.
Tommy, I did a little digging. Quad core CPU’s will be coming to the MacBook Pro line. Just not as soon as I thought. By the looks of it the update after the one thats coming for the MacBook Pro or the one a year from now will add the Quad core chip to the MacBook Pro. Intel has the chip and it should be released in early 2008. I mentioned the HD displays mainly for the 17 inch model of the MacBook Pro, which is what I’ll be getting. The Blu-ray drives is a highly educated guess based on the fact that Apple joined the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association). Larger hard drive is a possibility and more RAM is also a possibility and if they bump the CPU even more then thats all the better.

Ryan I really don’t know. It’s possible. When I was doing that digging various other things came out of it. Intel is working on a chip that will allow ALL OEM’s to produce laptops just as thin as the MacBook Pro. Also from what I read it will be fairly water proof. This is because it wont require any air ducts on the laptop. Rather it will pull air through the keyboard to cool it. I’ve got no clue what’s in store for the MacBook Pro when it goes Quad Core. All I know is it’s going to happen. Thus far the only draw back I’m seeing is that it will cause a drop in battery efficancy which means you get less mobile time. For that reason I see Apple waiting until after the chip uses less power or until they can make better batteries for the MacBook Pro line.
