I recently had to install x11 and did not have my Tiger install disk handy. I searched the Apple site for 10 minutes and couldn’t come up with a link. I am not alone.
Chris James Martin struggled with the issue and decided to host a link to download X11 packages for Apple.
You would think a link to a piece of software like this wouldn’t be such a big deal. Check the comments on Chris’ page and you’ll see that posting a link to download X11 has answered the prayers of many a stranded, travelling or vacationing Mac user who wanted to install anything like the Gimp or Openoffice without their install CD. A few commenters had trouble locating X11 as an optional package on their Tiger install disk and had to use Chris’ link.
Apparently, Chris met with a challenge or two about the legality of hosting and distributing the package from his site. Distribution of the package is controlled by the XFree86 Licenses and, having to know a little something about the law for my day job, I think Chris’ interpretation of the license is right on.
