This is a big one.
But first I have to tell you I’m a little bummed out about our week of progress trying to use “Attention“. I tried to sneak some practice for Week 1 of our hand signals in a couple of days ago when my wife was pulling out of the driveway and I was standing at the top of the driveway admiring her beauty. No kids around, no traffic. It seemed like the perfect time to try to test the signal out in a working environment with minimal casualties if something went horrribly wrong.
She thought I was waving to her.
I’m not giving up. I politely explained I was using the new official hand signals. She remembered and said “Oh, what do you want?” That’s progress.
This weeks Hand Signal For Couples is crucial. The “I Am Ready, or Are You Ready” signal is the essence of successful strategic familial movement. If we can master this one we can go anywhere at a moment’s notice with intricate coordination. School, beach, church, heavily crowded inexpensive restaurants, play zones. It won’t matter where we are, as a couple, we will move in sync and our communication skills will be the envy of onlookers everywhere.
This week’s signal is daunting. Three commands in one? This hand signal is what they must be talking about in Section 1-3(b): “They (hand signals) may be misunderstood.”
Here it is, week 2 of our new standardized hand signals for couples: “I Am Ready, or Ready To Move, or Are You Ready”

This one’s going to look really odd. Why is the same signal used for “I am ready” and “Are you ready”? It seems to me that, if the signalee wasn’t ready and was trying to indicate that to the signaller, but the signaller just kept going along like the signalee was ready, that things could get very messy (especially in one of those grossly overcrowded inexpensive restaurants, especially if it’s one of those self-serve places).
