Shifter FAQ

FAQ

  • Is Shifter XHTML valid?
    • Yes, the default installation of Shifter is XHTML valid.
  • Why do widgets not appear on my site when I load them into the module positions?
    • If widgets do not update on your site when you load them into your module positions, you are most likely using a version of Wordpress before 2.2. Prior to version 2.2, Wordpress required a plugin to display widgets. The most common plugin was Wordpress Widgets by Automattic. That plugin does not permit names like “sidebar 1″ to be given to widgets. Instead, Widgets by Automattic plugin only permits numerical references to widgets like “1″ or “2″.

      That really sucks. Shifter is very powerful and contains 13 module positions! Without words, it is very difficult to determine where you are placing your content.

      If you are not using the most current version of Wordpress, we strongly suggest you upgrade. However, there is a workaround for widgets not updating in your sidebar if you are still using the Widgets by Automattic plugin. Open your functions.php file for in your shifter folder and replace lines 4-18 with the follwing:

      if ( function_exists('register_sidebars') )
      register_sidebars(13);

      This can make things difficult to follow as far as inserting content into the proper module position because Shifter has 13 modules. Use this as a reference guide to the numerical order of the modules:

      1. First Sidebar = 1
      2. Second Sidebar =2
      3. Top Module = 3
      4. Inset Module =4
      5. Toolbar Module = 5
      6. Advert Module = 6
      7. User 1 Module = 7
      8. User 2 Module = 8
      9. User 3 Module = 9
      10. User 4 Module = 10
      11. User 5 Module = 11
      12. User 6 Module = 12
      13. User 7 Module = 13
