As the first Superbowl with African American coaches approaches, take a look at this NYT article which describes the NFL’s lame attempt at a charitable contribution to the African nations like Nigeria, Sierra Leone, or Uganda. The NFL ships the Superbowl loser pre-printed champion tshirts and hats to one of the countries after the big game is over. The hats and shirts are handed out so that the lucky recipients can run around in the loser gear. Insulting their intelligence and making the NFL feel like they really did something good towards the betterment of Africa as a whole.
The idea is to smuggle the shirts and hats out of the country as fast as possible so that they don’t show up on eBay. We are talking about 288 shirts and hats. About 748 million people live in Africa and a few of them might have a shirt or hat by mid-week. If they’re really lucky, they might get both a hat and a shirt.
If the NFL really wanted to do something, they WOULD sell the gear on eBay and send the cash to the same the countries.
So here it is, BuzzDroid.com’s first list, “Our Favorite African Relief Projects”:
- Bill and Melinda Gates giving oodles of cash for better health
- Bono and the ONE Campaign
- MIT One Laptop per Child project
- NFL Loser Gear Initiative
