Like we said, Shifter is not about cool colors and gradients; Shifter is about structural functionailty for your blog layout. But just because we are not concentrating on cool colors and gradients right now, doesn’t mean you can’t. Each version of Shifter has built in functionality to support a Shifter Skin.
What Is A Shifter Skin
“Skins” or “Themes” - what’s the difference. A “theme” is the template structure for your blog. The theme controls the way your blog or website looks. A “skin” controls the way your theme looks. A skin can control the colors, fonts and other elements of your theme without destroying the physical layout of your blog.
A Shifter Skin is a skin designed for Shifter. Remember, Shifter is about finding the right fit for the pieces that make up the puzzle of your blog layout. Think of Shifter as the shape of the pieces to the puzzle and the Shifter Skin as the picture the puzzle reveals.
How To Skin Shifter
Open /skins/basic.css in your Shifter folder and start hacking!
For example, to turn your Shifter background black and your blogtitle white, open shifter/css/shifter-skin.css and add
body {
background:#000;
}
#hd a {
color:#fff;
}
Save the file and your done. Any elements you define in basic.css will override the default blue Shifter Skin.
If you make a change that gets you in trouble, don’t panic. Just clear your basic.css and Shifter will revert to the default blue Shifter Skin.

can you change the overall background of shifter to an image file instead of a gradient or just a plain color?

How customizable is the CSS? Can I change the fonts - size, color, type? Is there documentation about this I can use as a guide?
